This is an excellent example of a barleywine. Huge bitter finish that just hangs around for days. One of the best, absolutely outstanding. A rite of passage for beer drinkers, along with such brews as Arrogant Bastard.

At close to 10% alcohol this is one of the strongest beers I've tasted.

And like many of its mates in the same weight-class it's not particularly pleasant to drink.

However, unlike the strong lagers (such as Carlsberg's Elephant), this malt liquor does have a taste beyond mere alcohol, which is a definite advantage over them.

I've only tried this one once and am sorry to say I didn't really enjoy it. Not having drank many barleywines I can't say if it's the category in general or this particular brew.

This is a late winter, early spring seasonal barleywine style ale. I just saw it recently for the very first time, so I thought I'd give it a try. Like Sierra's other products it carries quite a bit of bitterness with it, unfortunately I can't say it was as pleasant as their other selections. I think this unfortunate taste has to do with the 9.6% alcohol content it carries. Worth a try if you're a Sierra fan, otherwise I'd probably avoid it.
